Sudbury Select Board sends draft firearms bylaw to town counsel for review

SUDBURY — June 27, 2023 — Sudbury Select Board sends draft firearms bylaw to KP Law as one member declares opposition. The board on June 27 directed Town Manager Andy Sheehan to forward a revised draft firearms-business zoning bylaw to town counsel for legal review, with changes including 10 a.m.-to-5 p.m. hours, three-year video retention, expanded setbacks from parks and religious institutions, an insurance requirement and a one-year special-permit duration. Member Daniel Carty warned the layered restrictions could eliminate every candidate parcel in town and pressed for a zoning-map analysis. Member Lisa Kouchakdjian announced she is "a hard no on this bylaw," citing Teixeira v. County of Alameda, 873 F.3d 670 (9th Cir. 2017). The board also appointed Lexington Building Commissioner James Kelly to the Permanent Building Committee 5-0, and Combined Facilities Director Sandra Duran reported the $32 million Fairbank project is targeting Nov. 6 occupancy and the $5.83 million Fire Station Addition is 49.6 percent expended.
