Sudbury Select Board votes 4-1 to oppose Hanscom Field jet hangar expansion

SUDBURY — April 23, 2024 — Sudbury Select Board adopts 4-1 resolution opposing Hanscom Field private jet hangar expansion. Energy and Sustainability Committee Chair Rami Alwan told the board the project would increase flights by roughly 50 percent and add 300,000 to 400,000 metric tons of CO2 annually, calling developers' "net zero" framing "disingenuous." Member Daniel Carty cast the lone no vote, saying the data came from an advocacy group's consultants without independent verification. The board separately accepted Marcum LLP's clean FY23 audit, which reported a $120 million general fund budget, $22.5 million total general fund balance, $50 million OPEB liability against a $13.8 million trust, and debt service at 2 percent of the budget — a figure Finance Director Dennis Cohane cautioned is "a lagging number" before Fairbank and fire station debt layers in. The board also supported a $245,073 snow and ice deficit transfer and a $380,000 Sudbury Housing Trust CPA allocation, 4-1, with Charles Russo opposed.
