Sudbury rail trail committee backs national bike route designation
Rail Trails Advisory Committee · Meeting of January 7, 2026
Sudbury committee endorses U.S. Bicycle Route 1 as police outline rail trail safety push. The Rail Trails Advisory Committee voted unanimously Jan. 7 to recommend the Select Board back the Adventure Cycling Association and MassDOT designation, which would route cyclists through town via Pelham Island, Landham and Woodside roads at no cost to Sudbury.
Police Lt. John Perodeau told the committee the department fields about three off-road calls per month and has secured $20,000 for a grant-funded electric dual-sport motorcycle, $11,000 for traffic enforcement and $2,500 for safety giveaways. Perodeau said high-powered dirt bikes marketed as e-bikes are the department's fastest-growing worry, calling them "primarily dirt bikes, off-road vehicles." Staff liaison Marsha Doyle reported that Bruce Freeman Phase 2D maintenance has not been accepted because ADA access at the Bradford Acres Farm ramp remains unresolved, and that Phase 3's 75 percent design goes to MassDOT within six weeks.
