SUDBURY — December 11, 2023 — Sudbury Council on Aging sets Feb. 6 soft opening for new senior center. Senior Center Director Debra told members the existing center closed Dec. 11 for the move into the Fairbanks Community Center, with movers arriving Thursday and reopening targeted Dec. 20. Council member Paul Marotta confirmed Feb. 6, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. as a "firm date" after two earlier slips, with the event budget cut from $2,600 to about $1,000 because the Friends of Sudbury Seniors may steer funds to a spring grand opening instead. A $100,000 Cummings Foundation grant has already been absorbed by other kitchen equipment, leaving an estimated $30,000 to $60,000 in missing appliances — a convection oven, warming cabinet, ice maker and steamer — unfunded in what will be the town's only emergency shelter. Member Bob Leary reported the Go Sudbury taxi subsidy is burning $9,000 to $10,000 monthly and warned a $125,000 state earmark sponsored by Rep. Carmine Gentile may need a carryover filing to survive the fiscal year.
