Sudbury Council on Aging plans two-week December shutdown for move to new center

SUDBURY — October 23, 2023 — Sudbury Council on Aging maps two-week December move and braces for Town Meeting contingency vote. Director Debra Galloway told the board the senior center will close on or about Dec. 11 and reopen Dec. 27 or 28, with movers trucking boxed materials between buildings while virtual classes continue. Project manager Sandra Duran was scheduled to present Article 7 the same evening, seeking $900,000 in additional contingency funds Galloway attributed to pandemic-driven change orders. Chair Paul Marotta flagged an unresolved dispute with the town manager over whether the new building's shared multipurpose, fitness and arts-and-crafts rooms will remain senior-center priority space from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays as originally designed: "He's the town manager and he's going to manage the building." The Go Sudbury Uber program now has more than 260 enrollees; the Go Sudbury taxi program is close to 200, both capped at 10 one-way rides per month. Member Carmine Gentile reported the new state tax bill doubles the senior circuit-breaker credit from $750 to $1,500 and raises the maximum senior property-tax work-off benefit from $1,500 to $2,000.
