Park and Recreation Commission elects Huston chair, advances pool and field plans

SUDBURY — June 9, 2025 — Sudbury Park and Recreation Commission elects Mara Huston chair as Atkinson Pool shutdown looms. The commission voted 5-0 to install Huston as chair and retain Laurie Eliason as vice chair, with member Robert "Bobby" Beagan moving the slate and member Granger seconding. Combined Facilities Director Sandra Duran told the commission the pool will close Aug. 16 through approximately Dec. 1 under the JJ Cardosi contract, with a second three- to four-week shutdown in May 2026 to install a custom rooftop dehumidification unit carrying a 33-week lead time. Director Dennis said swim teams have been told to develop a Plan B and warned the closure will erode retained earnings, citing baseline pool expenses of $20,000 to $25,000 monthly against swim-season revenue of "30 to 40 during swim team season, 50,000 a month." Assistant Town Manager Victor reported the Meadow Walk mitigation account holds more than $450,000 across multiple set-asides.
