Library trustees amend hotspot policy after foreign roaming incident
SUDBURY — June 4, 2024 — Goodnow Library Trustees tighten hotspot rules after a borrower's British Virgin Islands trip triggered thousands in roaming charges. The board voted unanimously June 4 to amend the Library of Things policy to bar tampering with device settings and to make clear that hotspots are for U.S. use only and that borrowers are responsible for any roaming charges. Library Director Esmé said the carrier ultimately reversed the charges because the library's plan was not supposed to permit roaming abroad. Trustees also pressed for a roughly $6,000 second-floor bottle filler, with one member pointing to roughly $400,000 in town accessibility funds and a facilities discretionary account historically funded at $75,000 to $80,000 a year. The annual trust fund expenditure-limits vote was tabled to September; the board confirmed the March 31, 2025 town election on its calendar.
