Historical Commission deems Raymond Road barn historically significant, triggers demo-plan review

SUDBURY — July 16, 2024 — Sudbury Historical Commission opens demolition-delay clock on 1890 Raymond Road barn. The commission voted 6-0 to deem an outbuilding at 85 Raymond Road historically significant after member William Andreas identified hand-hewn pegged beams suggesting construction as early as 1790 and "at least four building periods" on site; town assessor records place the barn on the property by 1890. Chair Christopher Hagger lost power mid-discussion and Vice-Chair Michael Wallace presided during the vote. The owner, citing safety risks from the dilapidated structure, asked whether to pursue an emergency permit instead; the commission offered an August 20 public hearing if a full demolition plan is filed within a week. Separately, the commission voted 7-0 that a 1980s-era porch enclosure at 225 Raymond Road is not historically significant, and adopted 7-0 a new expenditure policy raising the Hosmer House purchase limit to $500 and capping cost-overrun contingencies at 25 percent. Outgoing Treasurer Jan Costa reported the general fund closed fiscal 2024 with just under $3,200 unspent.
