Historical Commission declines to endorse $400,000 Wayside Inn Bridge CPC application

SUDBURY — November 14, 2023 — Sudbury Historical Commission declines to endorse $400,000 Wayside Inn Bridge CPC request. A motion by member Diana Warren to support the Community Preservation Committee application failed 3-3-1 on Nov. 14, with Chair Christopher Hagger voting no and Vice Chair Catherine McGrath, Jan Costa and Marjorie Katz abstaining. Hagger called the granite-faced redesign a "fake arch" with "no historical basis on any other bridge in Sudbury," while member William S. Andreas defended it as the product of roughly eight Historic District Commission meetings that pushed materials away from concrete. Costa noted the application lacks itemization of the $400,000, double the 2019 design-phase estimate of $200,000. The commission also declined to open the Hosmer House for the Dec. 2 town holiday event pending a second round of post-mold-remediation air quality testing, signed an inventory contract with Robley Historic Preservation LLC of Auburn, N.Y., and logged 12 inquiries on the Hosmer House structures-report RFP ahead of its Dec. 11 deadline.
