Historic Districts Commission conditionally approves Wayside Inn timber pavilion

SUDBURY — November 6, 2025 — Sudbury Historic Districts Commission approves Wayside Inn pavilion with siting changes and sends Town Hall generator back for redesign. Commissioners voted 5-0 Thursday to grant a Certificate of Appropriateness for the four-bay timber-frame "crux" pavilion at 73 Wayside Inn Road, conditioned on the structure being moved roughly 15 feet west and further from the historic red barn, after Wayside Inn Foundation trustee Victor Sokowski said the beer-garden operation drew "hundreds of thousands" of new online followers to the nonprofit campus. The board declined to approve siting of a $250,000, 90-kilowatt emergency generator on the lawn between Town Hall and the Loring Parsonage, with Vice Chair Taryn Trexler calling it "dismaying" that an earlier Flynn Building generator was installed without HDC review and that the Sudbury Historical Society had not been consulted. Chair Anuraj Shah was given authority to negotiate an alternative location with Combined Facilities Director Sandra Duran. The commission also approved Everite composite garage doors and a dry-stack fieldstone wall at Trexler's home at 253 Concord Road, with both Trexler and Shah recused.
