Sudbury ZBA opens public input on remote-district firearm sales bylaw

SUDBURY — October 21, 2024 — Sudbury ZBA opens third-round firearm bylaw debate centered on isolated eastern parcel. The Zoning Board of Appeals held an Oct. 21 public input session at Goodnow Library on an ad hoc citizens committee draft that would rename the ID6 industrial district as IDX1 and allow commercial firearm sales there by special permit. Chair John Riordan said two prior town meeting articles — a 2023 ban and a 2024 Route 20 restriction — won majorities but missed the two-thirds threshold under Chapter 40A. Member Frank Riepe said the parcel, south of Route 20 opposite the transfer station and 40 feet below the roadway, "doesn't border any other Sudbury districts." Resident Jeff Phillips challenged the draft's $5 million liability insurance figure as unsourced and urged outreach to ATF and Second Amendment groups; attorney Len Simon defended the figure on commercial-policy grounds. Written comments remain open one additional week.
