Sudbury Select Board narrows firearms bylaw, sets public forum before warrant deadline

SUDBURY — January 23, 2024 — Sudbury Select Board tightens firearms bylaw and signals Camp Sewataro audit. The board reached consensus on a 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. hours limit, a 250-foot setback that now explicitly includes rail trails, and the Select Board as special permit granting authority, with the bylaw confined to the Industrial District. Chair Janie Dretler and member Lisa Kouchakdjian opposed the direction; Kouchakdjian said she sees "no basis in law for the town of Sudbury to be required to have a gun store here." A 5-0 vote authorized a public forum contingent on the draft being final. Camp operator Scott Brody told the board he is "100 percent fine with" an independent audit, which Town Manager Andy Sheehan estimated at $15,000 to $25,000; the board separately voted 5-0 to commit $17,000 in ARPA funds toward a $74,865 MWRTA Catch Connect transit pilot.
