Sudbury Historical Commission backs new Revolutionary Cemetery research, weighs memorial

SUDBURY — August 16, 2022 — Sudbury research more than doubles the count of Revolutionary War soldiers known buried in the town cemetery. Retired Col. Ed Kreutz told the Historical Commission on Aug. 16 he has documented 106 soldiers interred at the Revolutionary War Cemetery, up from the 41 currently marked and the 32 identified in an earlier study by George Quintal. Sudbury Historical Society Vice President Ellen Niederman said veterans agent Michael Hennessy has supplied 64 new Betsy Ross flags, and the society wants a panel marker listing all 106 names. A 2012 ground-penetrating radar survey had located 976 possible burial sites and 70 buried headstones. In a separate item, the commission voted 5-2, with Chair Christopher Hagger dissenting, to send the Army Corps of Engineers a letter declining to commit to the Eversource transmission-line MOA by the Aug. 29 deadline, citing the Historic District Commission's recent decision requiring Eversource to retain about 40 feet of track at the Section Toolhouse.
