Select Board denies package store license for Sudbury Sundries

SUDBURY — April 4, 2023 — Sudbury Select Board denies Sudbury Sundries package store license on credibility grounds. The board voted 4-0 Tuesday — with Vice-Chair Radha Gargeya absent — to reject Ashraf Yousef's application for a wine and malt beverage license at 100 Boston Post Road, citing a Sept. 20, 2012 police incident report and testimony from Police Chief Scott Nix that Yousef had continued selling "bath salts" and synthetic marijuana after pledging to stop and even after the products became illegal. Member Janie Dretler said honesty was a "number one factor," and Member Daniel Carty said he was "not itching to give a liquor license to somebody that may not hold it responsibly." Findings of fact also cited a 2018 Board of Health case in which the store sold cigarettes to two teenagers 10 minutes apart, drawing a three-day license suspension and $200 fine. KP Law's Tom McEnany will return a written decision on April 25. The board also voted 4-0 to support Article 38 (Water Resource Protection Overlay District zoning cleanup) and Article 41 (~$400,000 CPA funds for 67-73 Nobscot Road affordable housing diligence), and signed the 2023 town meeting warrant for delivery by April 24.
