Historical Commission advances Eagle Scout kiosk and painting restoration donation

SUDBURY — July 15, 2025 — Sudbury Historical Commission advances Eagle Scout sign, painting donation and gravestone restoration. Chair Christopher Hagger reported 214 visitors at the July 4 Hosmer House open house — 80 to 90 percent first-timers — and set the next open house for Aug. 17 with a tentative holiday event Dec. 6-7. Eagle Scout candidate Theo Brown presented a sketch for a replacement kiosk at the Haynes Garrison site that must also clear the Historic Districts Commission. Belchertown resident Judy Roberts offered to fund restoration of a Florence Hosmer painting in memory of her parents; conservator Judy DeOn estimated roughly $2,000 for a donated Connecticut portrait after concluding "Boy on the Sofa" needs no further work. Members agreed to return the broken Maynard Wheeler gravestone, fractured by a car in 1976, to the Revolutionary War Cemetery behind its 1977 replacement, citing a 2022 estimate from conservator Tamara Conde of $600 to $800. The May 20 minutes were approved 5-0-1.
