Historical Commission accepts cemetery research, updates kiosk after six-month dispute

SUDBURY — March 21, 2023 — Sudbury Historical Commission accepts cemetery research over one dissent, ending a six-month standoff. The commission voted 6-1 to accept Sudbury Historical Society research adding burials and correcting 52 names on the Revolutionary War Cemetery kiosk, with Diana Warren the lone no vote over what she called insufficient primary-source verification. Volunteer researcher Ed Kreutz, who said he had worked full-time for a year on the project, objected to a third vote on his work: "I am tired of this constant beating on my work after two votes." In a separate 5-1 vote, commissioners amended the cemetery's formal name to "Revolutionary War Cemetery established 1716 as Old Burying Place," replacing "burial ground" with "burying place." The commission also voted 7-0 to recommend William Andreas, a trained archaeologist and 15-year veteran of the Historic Districts Commission, for the open full-member seat.
