Board of Health approves tight tank variance for 100 East Street water facility

SUDBURY — September 11, 2024 — Sudbury Board of Health approves East Street tight tank as rodent fight shuts Sudbury Farms prepared-food counters. The board on Sept. 11 unanimously granted the Sudbury Water District a Title 5 variance for a 2,000-gallon tight tank at the 100 East Street water treatment facility, conditioned on a 60-percent-capacity alarm and annual pump-outs, after a December 2023 plumbing code update forced the project to add a restroom. Weston & Sampson engineer Dylan Erickson said the Zone 1 wellhead site has no feasible sewer tie-in. Health Director Vivian told the board Sudbury Farms has suspended deli, seafood, bakery, sushi and cheese counter operations amid heavy mouse activity, with pest control on site up to twice a day and the department pushing to accelerate a 2026 renovation. Mosquito control reported three additional EEE-positive pools on Sept. 6 and the town's third West Nile-positive pool since 2004. The department is also actively investigating a salmonella case at a separate food establishment with state epidemiologists.
