Sudbury Finance Committee backs $20 delinquent tax fee, splits on alcohol articles

SUDBURY — November 24, 2025 — Sudbury Finance Committee recommends $20 demand fee, takes no position on alcohol articles. The committee voted 7-2 Monday to back Article 8 doubling the delinquent tax demand fee from $10 to $20, with Henry Sorett and Co-Chair Michael Ferrari opposed. Assistant Town Manager Victor Garofalo said the town issued demand notices on roughly 110 delinquent real estate bills and 2,800 motor vehicle excise bills from fiscal 2025, with about 20 percent ultimately written off. On Articles 6 and 7 adopting state alcohol-license options, a motion by Eric Poch to recommend approval failed 3-6 before a no-position motion carried 6-3. Sorett called the demand-fee increase "the heel of the boot of government." Garofalo told the committee that overlay surplus of roughly $1.7 million proposed by a former member to fund school roof projects "would be deemed not within the four corners" without a Board of Assessors vote.
