Sudbury Conservation Commission approves herbicide treatment for Trevor Way vernal pool

SUDBURY — October 3, 2022 — Sudbury Conservation Commission greenlights chemical attack on phragmites invading a Trevor Way vernal pool. The commission voted to amend a 2018 order of conditions for 9 Trevor Way, allowing ecological land manager Brian Collarin to stem-inject phragmites and spot-treat Japanese knotweed and bittersweet with glyphosate after years of manual removal failed to hold the line. Conservation Coordinator Lori warned the under-100-square-foot phragmites patch would "quickly take over the entire vernal pool habitat" if left alone. Member Richard Morris abstained. In a separate continued hearing on a teardown-rebuild at 38 Massasoit Ave., GLM engineer Joyce Hastings presented revisions cutting the footprint to 30-by-64 feet and reducing impervious surface by 133 square feet, but abutters and Vice-Chair Kenneth Holtz pushed back on the move from three to four bedrooms within the buffer zone. That hearing was continued to Oct. 17.
