SUDBURY — The Sudbury FY28 Budget Working Group reported Wednesday that the town's projected deficit narrowed to $289,000 from roughly $900,000, after a lower Middlesex County Retirement System assessment and insurance savings. A finance official identified as Victor said free cash was certified September 25 at $9,985,147, and that the retirement assessment could be cut by $501,000 for fiscal 2028. Victor presented two budget guidance options: a 3 percent increase would leave a $668,000 surplus, while 3.5 percent would leave $142,000.
Lincoln-Sudbury staff said the district needs three additional teaching assistants and a 1.2 FTE increase for special education programs, saying the district is "obligated legally, and... morally and ethically" to serve students through age 22. Town manager Andy warned the town faces a $3.6 million to $3.7 million deficit in fiscal 2029 and will eventually need an override or service cuts. No formal votes were taken.
