The Town of Sudbury announced Oct. 22 that construction on the Sherman's Bridge Rehabilitation Project is anticipated to begin Monday, Nov. 9, with the bridge closing to traffic for the duration of the work.

The project is expected to be completed by Feb. 1, 2027, about 12 weeks later. Detour route signage will be in place during the closure, and a notice to abutters about the project work has been mailed.

Sherman's Bridge carries Sherman's Bridge Road on the Wayland side across the Sudbury River near Lincoln Road on the Sudbury side. The bridge, reconstructed in 1992, serves as a route for residents, emergency responders and daily travel between the two towns, according to the town.

MassDOT has cited the need for significant structural repairs to keep the bridge open and has required use of a glulam, or equivalent, deck system. Recent inspection reports have found that severe and critical repairs are needed, rated high priority. The project is described as a rehabilitation, not a full replacement: the existing timber substructure and stringers will remain, with the current wooden deck replaced by a stronger glulam timber deck, crash-tested railings and approach guardrails installed, and targeted substructure repairs completed.

MassDOT, through local transportation funds, is covering the cost of the glulam decking materials and providing its on-call contractor to replace the deck and railings. The remaining project costs will be shared equally by Sudbury and Wayland.

Residents with questions were directed to contact their town's Department of Public Works. In Sudbury, that is Tina Rivard, public works director, at 978-440-5421. The project team can also be reached by email at Shermansbridge@wayland.ma.us.
