LS School Committee plans college survey on AP access and unweighted GPA

SUDBURY — November 19, 2024 — Lincoln-Sudbury committee hears parents demand equitable access to nine AP courses. Director of Curriculum Leslie Patterson and Superintendent/Principal Andrew Stephens told the LS School Committee on Nov. 19 that 12 students were unscheduled for AP Biology and eight for AP Statistics this year, after a partial restoration of 0.25 FTE in math and science improved on last year's 35-student shortfall in AP Bio. Junior Jake Heckler said he requested three APs, got none, and will self-study for three exams: "If I'd gotten into an AP class, I wouldn't have felt the need to self-study so many courses." Member Maura Carty noted just 46 percent of LS juniors and seniors sit for AP exams, the lowest in a peer-district comparison. The administration will survey college admissions officers on LS's AP catalog, unweighted GPA and double-enrollment constraints. Director of Finance Kirsteen Patterson reported FY24 closed with $64,302 unspent on a $37,095,789 budget.
