Historic Districts Commission directs wood-shingle roof for Hosmer House

SUDBURY — January 5, 2023 — Sudbury Historic Districts Commission steers Hosmer House toward a wood-shingle roof and copper gutters. Members on Jan. 5 told Sudbury Historical Commission member Christopher Hagger to bring the facilities director new direction for the town-owned property: cedar shingles on the main house, porch and shed, copper flashing, half-round copper gutters with three-inch round downspouts, and removal of a non-original skylight. Chair Anuraj Shah said asphalt is "semi-disposable" on a 250-year-old civic building; Vice Chair Taryn Trexler and member Jordan backed the upgrade. The original 2020 town meeting appropriation of $50,000 covered only an asphalt re-roof with no gutters. Earlier, the commission voted 4-0 to approve a certificate of appropriateness for a pre-installed brick walkway on King Philip Road after applicant Kelly Abrams said the prior surface had a slope "in the teens percent."
