Sudbury Commission on Disability endorses Smiles Playground redesign for May town meeting
Commission on Disability · Meeting of February 17, 2026
Sudbury Commission on Disability backs accessible Smiles Playground redesign ahead of May town meeting. Assistant Town Manager Victor presented the revised roughly 1,100-square-foot layout, which packs a universal merry-go-round, sensory tunnel, chimes, drums, a rocker seat and a farmers market panel into a footprint constrained by two septic systems that cannot be covered in poured-in-place surfacing. Chair Alicia Quinto pushed for a shaded picnic table to sit partially on accessible surfacing, warning that partial access means a child "can't get to it" when peers gather.
The commission also voted 5-0 to co-sponsor a virtual stigma talk with the LS and SPS special education parent councils, and 4-0 to approve a proclamation asking the Select Board to designate the week of July 26 as Disability Independence Week. Resident Kay Bell reminded members the town's 2021 ADA transition plan is nearing the end of its three-to-five-year resolution window.
