Park and Recreation backs $1 million CPC requests for rail trail and Parkinson driveway

SUDBURY — December 4, 2023 — Sudbury Park and Recreation backs two CPC articles totaling $1 million, tables donated lacrosse wall. The commission voted 4-0 on Dec. 4 to support a $750,000 Community Preservation Committee request for Bruce Freeman Rail Trail Phase 3 design — up from an initial $250,000 ask after planning assistant Marsha learned unspent Phase 2D funds could not be transferred — and a $250,000 request to survey and possibly rebuild the driveway access to Parkinson Field off Hudson Road. The rail trail design segment covers 1.4 miles from Station Road past the Framingham line and is expected to position a roughly $7.5 million construction project for the state Transportation Improvement Program. Commissioners postponed action on a $25,000–$30,000 gift from Sudbury Youth Lacrosse for a precast concrete practice wall at Haskell Field after member Bobby Beagan said he needed staked dimensions before voting "in favor of it." Combined Facilities Director Sandra Duran told members the new Fairbank Community Center, opening in stages from Dec. 13, will not initially be available for third-party rentals as the town designs operating policies over six months to a year.
