SUDBURY — MIT AgeLab researcher tells Sudbury seniors longer lives outrun the planning tools built for them. Taylor Patterson, a research specialist at the AgeLab and a Boston College doctoral candidate, presented at a Senior Scene lunch sponsored by the Friends of Sudbury Senior Citizens, walking attendees through the lab's "8,000 days of retirement" framework and roughly a dozen active projects. She cited research showing some households lose up to half their median wealth in the six to eight years before an Alzheimer's diagnosis, with financial mismanagement, including scams, gambling apps and excessive online shopping, identified as the biggest single driver.
Patterson said about one in five Americans currently provides care to an adult family member and described the AgeLab's Longevity Preparedness Index, developed with John Hancock, on which national-survey respondents scored particularly low on home and care questions. She passed around Paro, the AgeLab-developed companion seal robot now reimbursable through Medicare, and demonstrated slides on AGNES, the age-empathy suit used in transit and CVS redesigns and in a Chris Hemsworth episode for National Geographic. "I am generally not interested in your cells or your spit," she said.
"I am interested in how you think and what you feel."
