Capital committee unanimously recommends Haynes and Nixon school roof articles

SUDBURY — November 10, 2025 — Sudbury capital committee unanimously recommends $11.2M in MSBA-backed school roof projects. The Capital Improvement Advisory Committee voted 5-0 on Nov. 10 to recommend approval of a full roof replacement at Haynes Elementary (approximately $7.4 million total, with about $2.98 million expected back from the Massachusetts School Building Authority at a 41 percent reimbursement rate) and a partial roof replacement at Nixon Elementary (approximately $3.8 million). Combined Facilities Director Sandra Duran said current estimates are roughly double those carried a year ago after MSBA estimators pushed for conservative numbers. Member Thomas Travers pressed for an added contingency, warning "the actual bids come in over what we're asking the town to do," but Assistant Town Manager Victor Garofalo said the MSBA-approved figure is fixed. Vice-Chair Peter Iovanella, citing his construction work, called the roof scope "very straightforward" and said prices have "leveled out" over the past 12 months. Both articles go to a special town meeting with a debt-exclusion request.
